A Broken People's Playlist

A Broken People's Playlist by Chimeka Garricks

I picked up this book because my fellow bookworms kept pushing it in my face through social media, and one personally sent it to me. I thought- before they over-hype this book, let me read it.

The reviews were also mixed, which got me curious; why are there people for and against this book? I am also not a fan of short stories, except if they are complete short stories, but I still went in with an open mind.

The book is a collection of sad, broken, and beautiful 12 short stories inspired by 12 songs. By the way, did you know he had a huge writer's block while writing it? Like what? Already a fan.

The first thing that caught my attention was the author's writing. I love his writing! He writes in a way that bonds with the book nerd in me!

And the songs? They reminded me of Wattpad.

Chimeka also won me over as some of the songs were familiar and were my favorites. It helps when you listen to the songs while reading the stories.

The stories, apart from one or two, were interwoven. It was nice to catch up on these characters and see their progress. This bought a smile to my face and added a star to my book rating. His author's note was inspiring. I couldn't even pick favorites. How do people do these wonderful things?

This is also the first book I read this year that made me tear up and swing me around my emotions. I was ready to protest, again, the injustice by the police officers, comfort those in pain, and laugh my head off.

The Nigerianness of this book- the contrast of suffering, pain, anguish, and well-timed comedy has won me over.

I sincerely enjoyed reading this book, and I highly recommend it.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
