Review: Death Note

Death Note has some of the most memorable characters I’ve ever seen in an anime, and their interactions are so complex and layered that it’s impossible not to be drawn into their struggles

Death Note is an incredibly popular anime series that has captivated viewers for years.

The manga was written by Tsugumi Ohba, illustrated by Takeshi Obata in 2003, and adapted into an anime series in 2006. It’s a story of a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook that grants him the power to kill anyone whose name he writes in it.

The story follows Light Yagami, a brilliant but bored high school student, as he uses the Death Note to create his own justice system and become the god of a new world order. The show is filled with intense psychological battles between Light and his nemesis, L, as they try to outwit each other. The animation is beautiful, and the soundtrack is also hauntingly beautiful.

Death Note has some of the most memorable characters I’ve ever seen in an anime, and their interactions are so complex and layered that it’s impossible not to be drawn into their struggles. The show also has dark themes, such as death and morality, making it even more compelling. Plus, it’s centered around a villain protagonist.

Pros

  • Engaging story with complex characters and plot twists.
  • Unique concept of a notebook that can kill people.
  • Excellent animation and soundtrack.
  • Explores themes of morality, justice, and power.

Cons

  • Dark and violent content may not be suitable for younger viewers.
  • The ending may be unsatisfying to some viewers.
  • Some characters are portrayed in a ‘negative light’ (see what I did there?), which could be seen as offensive to some viewers.

Death Note is an anime that will stay with me for years to come. It’s an unforgettable experience that I highly recommend to anyone looking for something unique and thought-provoking.

Hey there, I'm Cheza. I'm a jewelry designer who loves diving into fictional worlds. I started watching anime as a kid and eventually picked up books. And I'm absolutely obsessed with listening to audiobooks while I weave beads. My favorite genres for both books and anime are fantasy, psychological thriller, gore, action, and romance. I love villain protagonists.
