The name Littafi comes from the Hausa word for book—a simple, powerful reminder of what sits at the heart of everything we do.

We've been around since 2021, showing our passion for books, movies, and art, while curating thoughtful book and movie reviews, spotlighting emerging and established writers, and building a community of readers who believe in the transformative power of narrative.

Every month, we bring together data from reader ratings, literary awards, social trends, our editorial assessment, and, most importantly, your votes to determine which books are shaping the African literary conversation.

The Monthly 50 is not a list carved in stone. Books rise, books fall, new voices break through, and old favourites fight to stay on top. It is a constantly evolving picture of what African readers are reading, championing, and talking about—and your vote helps shape the record.
