About Littafi

Littafi is the Hausa word for book. The site is a literary and art-culture desk for African literature, fantasy, science fiction, film, and the charts that keep those shelves honest. We publish book reviews, movie reviews, author notes, and the Littafi Monthly 50 so a reader can decide what to spend the weekend on.

Littafi readers, books, and the desk behind the reviews

What Littafi is for

We started in 2021 because African books were still being reviewed as a niche of someone else's literature. Littafi treats them as the main room. Critics, journalists, and editors in Nigeria, Ghana, India, and the diaspora write the essays, lists, and reviews. High fantasy sits next to Lagos realism. A film note can carry the same weight as a novel.

The work is not a single taste. Epic, grimdark, afrofantasy, romance, contemporary fiction, and Nollywood share a desk. We do not grade books to be kind. We write so a reader in Accra, Abuja, or Glasgow can tell whether a title is worth the weekend.

The rooms

These are the landing pages. Each card is a door into a shelf we actually keep: African literature, the fantasy and science-fiction gate, film, news, and the essay desk.

Meet the team

Littafi is not a single byline. The editorial desk is critics, journalists, and editors. The portraits and longer notes live on the team page. These are the names that sign the shelves.

Questions readers ask

What does Littafi publish?

Book reviews, movie reviews, literary news, author spotlights, lists, and the Monthly 50 ranking of African literature. Genres run from African literature and fantasy to science fiction, romance, thrillers, and contemporary fiction.

Is Littafi only about African literature?

African literature is the main room, not the only one. Fantasy and science fiction have their own gate. Film has its own desk. The point is a shelf a reader can trust, with African books treated as literature rather than a sidebar.

What is the Littafi Monthly 50?

A living chart of the fifty works shaping African literature that month. Reader votes, ratings, awards, and editorial judgment sit in the same score. Vote Your Read is how a reader moves a title.

Where are the events?

The events calendar lists festivals, launches, readings, and literary nights. It is the accompaniment to the reviews, not a separate brand.
