Disney Plus Shoulders the Percy Jackson Burden for TV

Streaming giants Disney Plus have announced the adaptation of Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” mytho-fantasy series.

This comes on the heels of reports in 2020 of a Percy Jackson production being in the works. Fans of the franchise will be delighted at the announcement, as it is a reprieve from the disappointment of 20th Century Fox’s adaptation of Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, both of which massively underwhelmed at the box office.

Indeed, series writer Rick Riordan’s displeasure could not be hidden, as he pressed for a realization of his dream for a top-quality, live-action adaptation of his stardom-propelling middle-grade/YA series.

Given Disney Plus’ stellar reputation, it appears that his dream is set to be achieved, with casting for Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief currently underway.

The books will be adapted as a running TV series, written by Jon Steinberg and Rick Riordan himself, and the show will be directed by James Bobin, popular for his production and directing role in Disney Plus’ “Mysterious Benedict Society.”

Over the coming weeks, fans will eagerly place attentive ears to the ground for news on castings for Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, Grover Underwood, and other characters.

“Bringing Rick Riordan’s brilliant Percy Jackson books to Disney Plus as a television series has been a mission for so many of us at this company as well as for Rick himself, and Jon, Dan, James and the excellent team they have assembled have proven to be the perfect collaborators. Thanks to our friends at Disney Branded Television led by Ayo, and Disney Streaming led by Michael [Paull], this will be an adaptation for the ages, with all the excitement, action and mythology fans of the books expect and love,” said Karey Burke, 20th Television.

Percy Jackson and The Olympians is a tale of Greek demigods and the quest of a son of Poseidon, Percy Jackson, as he finds a way to avert global disaster after being framed for stealing Zeus’ thunderbolt.

Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief is the first book in the series, with the second book being Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters.
