Servant of the Empire

A stellar model in the writing of epic political thrillers.

Servant of the Empire serves up some really good writing that’s only to be expected of a combo of two of the best writers the genre has ever seen. There’s a lot more work done on the characters. We see the enlargement of the plot as even more threads appear. The cast is much larger and things are more complex. There’s also a lot of things happening at the same time. The characters are changing, evolving, maturing and the story is growing tighter around them.

We get to see far more world-building here than in the first book as the authors take great pain to detail the worlds and cultures of Midkemia and Kelewan. The structure of the Tsurani society becomes much clearer as we are allowed to explore the involution, the finer points of the socio-political construct. It’s a really complex, but yet extraordinarily detailed system. It’s complex enough to rival some of the best structures out there like the ones in the WoT series.

The end part is a bit surprising as I expected a bigger showdown. But hey, it’s a political thriller. No shockers.

Let’s see how it all ends in the final book.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
