The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard #1) by Scott Lynch

Locke is a genius. He makes Kaz Brekker look like a child (which he is; well kinda). His schemes are bloody schemes. Don’t get me wrong, Locke Lamora is not a good guy in any way. He’s more of an anti-hero that’ll always have my support.

The Lies of Locke Lamora

The Lies of Locke Lamora is quite a fitting title for this book. Because Locke is an amazing and exceptional liar. But this isn’t the story of the boy who lied too much.

Rather, it’s the story of the boy who stole too much.

If he had a bloody gash across his throat and a physiker was trying to sew it up, Lamora would steal the needle and thread and die laughing. He…steals too much.

That being said, this is a heist book and a book about criminals/thieves. Locke is the best thief I’ve ever read about. I love how he’s theatrical he is when he steals. The plot twists and schemes in this book are enough to make a sane man insane.

The plot is a mixture of the past and present with interludes. I found this to be very intriguing, as it gave an insight into the backstories of the characters.

Nature never deceives us;it is always we who deceive ourselves.

Writing

Scott Lynch’s writing is gold. It’s the most unique writing I’ve ever seen. It’s very satirical and very full of dark humor.

I want that gate swinging wider and faster than a whorehouse door.

The author is a master of stringing words together and making them very authentic.

The pork and capon in his stomach made enthusiastic inquiries about coming up in a nauseous torrent; his throat seemed to be on the verge of granting the request.

Characters

Locke Lamora

Locke is a genius. He makes Kaz Brekker look like a child (which he is; well kinda). His schemes are bloody schemes. Don’t get me wrong, Locke Lamora is not a good guy in any way. He’s more of an anti-hero that’ll always have my support.

Jean Tannen

A loyal friend and the muscle of the group. I love Jean and his character development very much.

Calo and Galdo

I loved the twins very much, but it was hard to tell them apart.

Bug

The youngest in the group. He always said very silly things, but I loved him nonetheless.

If you love books about criminals and heists, this is the perfect book.
