Hallo alle, it has been a long minute, long time no book review (Es tit mir sehr leid). Today, I’ll be sharing my honest thoughts on When Love Visits by Comfort Omovre.
When Love Visits is a contemporary romance novel that narrates how Uju and Tade, both in their thirties and successful fall in love at first sight.
Zuerst, I can assure you this is one African book that is trauma-theme-free, packed with a lot of lovey-dovey scenes (so if you are looking for a delulu book, dieses buch ist für sie).
I liked the theme of friendship between Uju, Tade, and Benjamin. There was no unnecessary Nollywood family drama (I wonder if it would have been a different case if Uju was poor sha).
My favorite thing about this book has to be the healthy communication skills zwichen Uju and Tade, and also the fact that he took time to properly heal after his last relationship before getting into a new one (some Nigerian men be dishing out trauma upandan the streets).
As much as this book might be a breath of fresh because of the lack of drama and trauma themes, I feel it could have been better. Warten sie mal! Before you crucify me. Some of the dialogues and scenes were unnecessarily long. Sometimes, authors should allow their audience to imagine how the rest of the conversation goes (a romance book without a plot twist has no business being 434 pages long).
Nein! Nein! Es hat mir sehr müde gemacht (we know say dem go marry las las, so make e no too long).
I also didn’t like the further explanation of Nigerian slang (if you are an avid reader you know what I mean)
For a book this lengthy, there was zero character development. While I loved how Uju was described as a career woman, there was really no scene showcasing this aspect. I feel we should have gotten chapters showcasing them thriving at work.
Omg! The repetition of the words ‘atlas’ and ‘bobbed’ is living rent-free in my head (dear editors please avoid this).
I will rate this a 2.5/5. If you are a lover of African books with heavy themes like myself, bitte!!! Don’t read this with high TikTok expectations like I did (e no go end well) ‘cos we’re already being dragged for our excessive love of depressing books
However, If you are a hopeless lovey-dovey delulu reader, When Love Visits is perfect for you.
