Lauren Bacall was 19 and Humphrey Bogart was 44 when they were cast together in To Have and Have Not in 1944. They married the following year, when she was 20 and he was 45. Hollywood has paired partners far apart in age many times, and the age-gap romance films worth watching are the ones in which the romance surprises the characters as much as it surprises the audience.
Billy Wilder adapted Samuel Taylor’s play Sabrina Fair and cast Audrey Hepburn as the daughter of the Larrabee family’s chauffeur. She returns from two years at a cooking school in Paris, and David Larrabee, the younger son she has loved since childhood, finally notices her. His older brother Linus, played by Bogart, courts her to protect David’s engagement and the corporate merger that depends on it.
The courtship begins as a tactic and ends as the romance the film is about, between a woman in her twenties and a man nearly 30 years older. William Holden plays David. Edith Head won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design. The screenplay received a Golden Globe nomination, and Hepburn was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Stanley Donen’s thriller pairs Hepburn, then 33, with Cary Grant, then 59. Grant was uneasy about the 25-year difference, and the filmmakers agreed to changes that addressed it. His character comments on his own age, and Hepburn’s character, the widow Regina, does the pursuing.
The romance develops while she tries to learn what happened to her husband and to gold stolen during the Second World War, so there is some doubt in every scene between them about who he really is. Grant’s character gives her four different names in the course of the story, and Walter Matthau, James Coburn and George Kennedy play the men chasing the gold.
Henry Mancini wrote the score. The film cost approximately $3 million and earned around $13.4 million, becoming a commercial success. The uncertainty surrounding Grant’s character gives the romance an additional complication beyond the age difference.
Hal Ashby directed this comedy from a script by Colin Higgins. Harold, a young man in his twenties, stages mock suicides and attends the funerals of strangers, and at those funerals he meets Maude, who is 79 and turns 80 during the story.
She steals cars with ease, and a tattoo on her arm shows that she survived a Nazi concentration camp. Bud Cort and Ruth Gordon play the pair, and Cat Stevens wrote and performed the songs.
The film failed commercially on release but later developed a devoted following. It ran for three consecutive years at the Westgate Theater in Minneapolis, long enough that residents reportedly picketed the cinema to have it replaced. The Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry in 1997.
Unlike most romantic films, Harold and Maude makes the enormous age difference central to its story without treating the relationship as a conventional romance.
Sofia Coppola’s film follows Bob Harris, a fading American film star played by Bill Murray, who is in Tokyo to promote Suntory whisky. At the Park Hyatt Tokyo, where both of them are awake at night, he meets Charlotte, a Yale philosophy graduate played by Scarlett Johansson who has been married for two years.
Coppola never states what the two are to each other. Their connection does not fit neatly into a conventional romance or a clearly defined arrangement. It is not presented as a sugar baby relationship, nor does the film confirm whether their closeness is romantic or something closer to an unlikely friendship. That uncertainty is part of what makes their time together memorable.
Bob’s final words to Charlotte are an improvised whisper the audience cannot hear, and Coppola kept it inaudible because she wanted it to stay between the two of them.
The film cost approximately $4 million and earned around $119 million worldwide. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, along with three BAFTA awards and three Golden Globes.
Nancy Meyers wrote and directed this comedy about Harry Sanborn, a 63-year-old record company owner played by Jack Nicholson, who dates only women under 30. He arrives at a beach house in the Hamptons with his girlfriend Marin, 29, and meets her mother, Erica Barry, a 56-year-old playwright played by Diane Keaton.
A heart attack keeps him in Erica’s house while he recovers, and the two fall for each other. After they part, she writes a play about the affair, and the story ends six months later in Paris.
The film uses the age gap in two directions. Harry ends up with a woman close to his own age, while Erica is courted at the same time by Julian Mercer, a 36-year-old doctor played by Keanu Reeves.
Keaton was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. The film made approximately $266.7 million worldwide on an $80 million budget.
Sally Field plays Doris Miller, a shy woman in her sixties who works in data entry. After her mother dies, she becomes infatuated with John Fremont, a much younger colleague played by Max Greenfield, and decides to pursue him.
With help from her friend’s teenage granddaughter, she sets up a false social media profile to learn what music he likes, then turns up at a concert by his favourite band.
Much of the story concerns the distance between what Doris hopes for and what John expects from their friendship. Late in the film he explains that he had been trying to introduce her to his uncle, a man closer to her age.
Michael Showalter directed the film from a screenplay based on a short film by Laura Terruso. It premiered at South by Southwest in March 2015 and earned approximately $14.7 million on a reported $1 million budget.
The film treats Doris’s feelings seriously while allowing the audience to see how differently the two characters understand their connection.
Showalter also directed this adaptation of Robinne Lee’s novel. Anne Hathaway plays Solène Marchand, a 40-year-old divorced gallery owner who takes her teenage daughter to Coachella and walks into the trailer of Hayes Campbell, the 24-year-old singer of a boy band, by mistake.
The 16-year gap, with the woman as the older partner, is the subject of the story. Once photographs of the couple appear online, Solène faces a large amount of sexist and ageist abuse, and the pair agree to wait five years, until her daughter has finished school, before resuming the relationship.
The film premiered at South by Southwest in March 2024. Its trailer reportedly attracted more than 125 million views across social media, while Amazon reported that the film reached nearly 50 million viewers worldwide in its first two weeks on Prime Video.
The public reaction to Solène and Hayes’s relationship gives the film a different focus from many earlier age-gap romances, particularly in how it portrays the scrutiny faced by an older woman.
When Bogart played Linus Larrabee opposite Hepburn in 1954, he had been married to Lauren Bacall for nine years.
That marriage lasted nearly 12 years, until his death in January 1957, and they had two children, Stephen and Leslie.
Most of the films in this list stop early in the relationship, and several end on a reunion or a goodbye. Bogart and Bacall lived through the part the films leave out, the years in which a gap between 45 and 20 became a gap between 57 and 32.
What connects these films is not simply the number of years between their characters. In Sabrina and Charade, the age difference complicates an attraction neither person entirely expects. Harold and Maude challenges the idea of what a romantic partnership should look like, while Lost in Translation leaves the nature of its central connection unresolved.
The more recent films approach the subject from another direction. Something’s Gotta Give, Hello, My Name Is Doris and The Idea of You place older women in stories where attraction, expectations and public judgment do not always move together.
Not every relationship here becomes a lasting romance, and not every film offers a conventional happy ending. That is part of what makes them worth watching. The age difference may bring the characters together or complicate what happens next, but the most memorable moments come from how they respond to a connection they did not expect.
