Book Review: You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero

If you are the type of person who is uncomfortable with the truth, then you might want to find a different book.

You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero

When I first attempted to read You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero, as usual, I went to Amazon and Goodreads to check reviews because I am skeptical of self-help books. One caught my attention.

If touchy-feely self-help tomes make you feel, shall we say, less than inspired, this no-nonsense manifesto to awesomeness might be just what you’re looking for. Filled with blunt and sassy advice, do-it-yourself exercises in personal transformation, and a whole lot of hilarity, You Are a Badass will silence your inner critic and help you build a life worthy of the kind of Facebook news feed that others envy. Take a day off from looking for your inner goddess and spending some time cultivating your outer badass instead.”

I read the review and screamed, “Sold!”

I knew I was up for a ride. I prepared myself for it, and I wasn’t disappointed. I might be late to the fandom (since this book was released in 2013), but I can still shout and say this book deserves every bit of hype and accolade it has gotten and still gets.

It is not your average self-help book. It is a unique voice and perspective in the self-help book world. The writer has a magnificent writing style and voice that keeps you glued to the book and gets you doing!  I read and listened to the audiobook narrated by the author, and it was an amazing experience.

The author provides you with bite-sized chunks of feasible and less daunting self-help instead of overwhelming you with a lot of information that would end up scaring you, rather than getting you out of your funk. That is a quality most SHBs lack.

The Verdict

Some might not like the author’s approach, but I did. This means I can only recommend this book from a very personal level. “Very” is emphasised here.

Sincero doesn’t sugarcoat issues. She goes for the Band-Aid and rips it off. If you are the type of person who is uncomfortable with the truth, then you might want to find a different book. But if you want to hear the truth, which would, in turn, let you know how much of a badass you are, then pick this up. This book is bold.

Her sense of humour is also top-notch. I laughed. I reflected. I was moved. I was inspired to do more. I have taken a lot from this book that I intend to practise. What You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero did to me is enough to scream about it countless times.

Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I will soon move on to her next book, “You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth.”

Let me know your thoughts on whether you have read this book or read it after reading this review.
