10 Bookish Habits of Bibliophiles

Well, if you don’t read books and you happen to overhear a couple of us raving passionately about how hot Celaena Sardothien is or how daft Perrin Aybara is or isn’t, you need not call 911. Just leave us in peace, will you, eh?

As book lovers, there are multiple habits we have in common. Anyone who is not a book reader will find it hard to understand, but within our bibliophilic circles, we do.

Whatever genre you enjoy reading, here are ten habits you’re probably inclined to:

Talking about fictional characters like they are real

This is something a non-reader will never understand. Readers have thousands of conversations about characters like they are real. Most join Goodreads and Reddit mainly to discuss fictional characters. Then, they spend hours on those sites just to talk about those characters.

Crazy, isn’t it? Well, if you don’t read books and you happen to overhear a couple of us raving passionately about how hot Celaena Sardothien is or how daft Perrin Aybara is or isn’t, you need not call 911. Just leave us in peace, will you, eh?

Book-to-movie adaptation debates

Whenever a book gets adapted into a movie or series, most readers rush to watch the adaptation. They already know what will happen, but they want to compare and see whether the adaptation is as good as the book/series, even though the adaptation usually never does the book justice.

Now that Amazon has decided to go as far as spending a reported $10 million per episode on producing just book 1 of 14 tomes of Robert Jordan’s (and Brandon Sanderson’s) Wheel of Time for motion picture (just season 1), expect the social media space to be dominated by book-reading critiques of the TV series from the 19th of November.

We just know that they will mess it up.

Getting into arguments about literature

This is something most book lovers are prone to do.

They can have heated arguments over characters that aren’t real. It can be fascinating to observe.

Completely missing a conversation because you’re reading

As a book lover and reader, you ought to have the ability to read anywhere, no matter how noisy it is. Someone could be talking to you, and you’ll completely zone out because of a book.

Preferring to stay home rather than go out

You can’t be a book lover and always be at parties and other places. Most book lovers tend to stay at home or indoors to read rather than go out to party.

Buying and hoarding books

You most likely have tons of books you plan to read, but when a new one comes out, you can’t help but get it.

Sometimes it’s one, and others times it’s more. And, before you know it, you’re hoarding books you’ll probably never finish in one lifetime.

Book hangover

Ever finished a great series or book and didn’t know what next to do with your life, feeling as if no book will ever live up to it?

The thought of even reading other books feels like a betrayal to the book you just finished! Sometimes the ending is so good, and other times, it’s so horrible you want to wipe it from your mind and rewrite the ending you want.

Taking a book everywhere you go

As a book lover, you take books everywhere, be it work to read during lunch breaks, weddings parties, and restrooms. You just have to know what will happen next.

Spending hours in a book store

Most book lovers will spend just a few minutes in malls and grocery stores, but they spend forever trying to decide which book to buy whenever they go to the bookstore. Eventually, they end up buying more than they plan to.

Leaving books in random places

Books lovers can read anywhere. Because of that, they tend to forget books in weird places. You can find books in their toilets, kitchen, bathroom, you name it.
