Movie Review: KPop Demon Hunters

Written by Theresa Ijachi

As a K-pop fan, it would be interesting if you told me promo clips of KPop Demon Hunters hadn’t bombarded you because I have. And for the most part, it looked fun, so I decided to give it a try, because why not?

An animation that brings to life all the elements of K-pop—bold fashion, intricate choreographies, group dynamics, catchy melodies and stan culture must be fun right?

Plot

If you guessed the plot would revolve around K-pop and demon hunting, ding ding, you guessed right. To be fair, the title does give it away a bit. Despite your correct or wrong guesses, let me give you a rundown of the plot.

“Demons have always haunted the world, stealing the souls of people and feeding it to their master Gwi Ma. This was the case until a trio of demon hunters arrived, who fought the demons with their voice. So for every generation, this responsibility falls upon a new thrio of singers. And the current generation’s thrio of demon hunters happen to be Rumi, Mira and Zoey who are also K-pop idols”.

Personally, I believe a plot revolving around demon hunting is not a unique one. However, combining demon hunting with K-pop and fighting demons with music is a fresh new take on demon hunting to me.

Pacing

For someone with a poor attention span, the pacing was perfect for me. It starts with a banger and a performance by Huntrix worthy of a Blackpink Mama Award Performance.

Music

The music was a big part of KPop Demon Hunters, and I can say it perfectly portrayed the sounds we often hear in K-pop.

Characters

I liked that the characters weren’t too annoying to watch. My only issue with the characters is that we didn’t really get to see their backstories. Especially for Rumi, I still have many questions.

What I didn’t like

While I enjoyed KPop Demon Hunters, I do wish a few things were done better. For one, I wanted a better knowledge of how demons worked and at least a bit of a backstory of the demon king, Gwi Ma.

Also, I wish they had explained better how their powers worked. What was it about their voices that chased demons back?

And my biggest issue with the movie is the romance between the two leads. While I enjoyed it, I felt like it happened too fast, so it didn’t feel as genuine as it should be.

Verdict

If you’re a fan of K-pop, you will love KPop Demon Hunters, but even if you aren’t and are looking for something fun to watch, you’ll love it regardless.

Have you watched it yet? If so, please leave your thoughts in the comment section below. Till next time!
