When confronted with evil, some individuals will go to any length to protect themselves and their loved ones by blurring the lines between good and evil.

Emezi is an author who writes queer-themed books that I would never hesitate to buy. I recently just finished Little Rot, and I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it.
The book narrates a chain of events and self-realization after Kanu and Aima’s separation. They both experience the dark side of Lagos that makes them question a lot of things.
The book covers many themes (some hard truths we are not ready to accept as a society).
Through the author’s writing, we are transported to a side of Lagos that only a small number of people have experienced. A side where the elite and religious leaders (some) engage in sex parties as an expression of power more than desire. It also shows that corruption dwells in the heart of every man, including our religious leaders.
There is also the theme of protection. When confronted with evil, some individuals will go to any length to protect themselves and their loved ones by blurring the lines between good and evil.
Another theme that I found intriguing is the sexual orientation of the characters, especially Kanu and Ahmed. The inner struggle they went through just to fight their desires and conform to societal expectations was intriguing.
What I enjoyed the most was Emezi’s writing technique.
I finished this book in two days. At first, I was skeptical about getting this book because of some of the reviews I saw online, but from the first page I was hooked.
Yes, some parts would make you squeeze your nose like you perceived rotten meat, but it doesn’t change the fact that some of the situations in the book are some people’s reality.
One thing Emezi is known for is their complex characters. In this book, each character is morally complex with flaws, desires, and hidden motivations that gradually come to light towards the end of the book.
We have characters who start as confident and powerful but become vulnerable, while others reveal unexpected resilience in the face of difficulties.
This book is definitely worth 🌟🌟🌟🌟.
If you know you enjoyed The Death of Vivek Orji, don’t hesitate to get this one.
If you don’t like queer books, please avoid this book (go and buy The Bishop’s Daughter instead).
Annabelle has been a lover of reading from a tender age. She has an avid interest in African literature because through those books, she has visited various African countries. She has a hunger to learn about other cultures from reading and wants to share her reading experience with the world.
