This is a Grimdark book which is unsurprising if you have read any of the author's previous works. In this new trilogy, we follow the story of Khraen told in the 1st POV.
The story starts out with Khraen literally bursting out of the ground with no recollection of who or where he is. We follow Khraen as he goes about trying to piece together the mystery of who he used to be.
He learns that his heart has been shattered into pieces, with each containing a fragment of his memory. He will need to find and absorb all pieces to regain his memory.
It is quite interesting to see the dilemma that Khraen faces as he discovers more about who he used to be; whether it would be better to simply choose to forgo his search for his past, or to continue to chase his memories even though he fears they might turn him back into the person he was before.
All in all, it was a fantastic opener to a new trilogy. I am looking forward to book 2 to see where this story leads us.
