My Best, Meh, and Worst Movies of 2021

Estimated read time 4 min read

2021 was an exciting year for movies. I had a lot lined up to watch, but sadly I didn’t make much of a dent in my hoard/collection.

2021 was also Marvel’s year. The amount of content the MCU churned out this year alone was crazy, from their movies to TV shows. It really was a great year for Marvel fans. And next year promises to be even better, with the trailer for Dr. Strange: Multiverse of Madness out and blowing our minds.

If you thought Spiderman: No Way Home had lots of cameos, wait until you see what The Multiverse of Madness has lined up.

Okay, that’s enough Marvel fangirling. It’s time to check out my year in movies.

P.S. Not every movie I watched made this list. These were the most memorable.

While there are movies I would definitely watch again, there are some I wish I could scrub out of my mind (Black Friday, I see you).

So, I’ve categorized the movies in order of likability.

We have the ones I loved (best), the ones I hated (worst), the ones that were just there (meh), and the ones that were neither good nor bad (it was something).

Without further ado, I bring you:

My Best Movies

Listed in no particular order:

  • Spider-Man: No Way Home
  • Encanto
  • Free Guy
  • I Care a Lot
  • Black Widow
  • Venom: Let There Be Carnage
  • Judas and the Black Messiah
  • The Harder they Fall
  • Raya and the Last Dragon
  • Zack Snyder’s Justice League
  • The Mitchells vs. the Machines
  • Cruella
  • Wish Dragon
  • Luca
  • The Fear Street Trilogy (the first horror series I truly enjoyed)
  • Gunpowder Milkshake
  • The Suicide Squad
  • Last Night in Soho

Meh Movies

Some of the movies in this category had unnecessary hype that probably led to their demise. And some were just plain waste of money and screentime. But they were still fun in some way to watch.

  • Fast and Furious 9 (F9 in more ways than one)
  • Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings (had fun fight scenes)
  • Outside the Wire (forgot the plot as soon as I watched it)
  • To All the Boys: Always and Forever (plot was beyond ridiculous)
  • The Kissing Booth 3 (unnecessarily long and tiresome)
  • Tom & Jerry: The Movie (why bother again?)
  • Godzilla vs. Kong (the trailers deceived us)
  • Mortal Kombat (waste of money)
  • Army of the Dead (ridiculous in a fun way)
  • Space Jam: A New Legacy (cheap nostalgia)
  • Jolt (only watched it for Kate Beckinsale)
  • Jungle Cruise (yet another The Rock Jungle movie)
  • Red Notice (only watched it for Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, and Dwayne Johnson)
  • Love Hard (only watched it for Nina Dobrev)
  • The Matrix 4 (cash grab and cheap nostalgia)

It was Something

  • Malcolm & Marie (it was something… in a good way, but I’m pretty sure I won’t have bothered if Zendaya wasn’t the star)
  • Moxie
  • Coming 2 America 2 (nostalgia cash grab)
  • Chaos Walking (interesting concept, not so great execution)
  • Nobody (low budget John Wick)
  • Those who Wish Me Dead (Angelina Jolie saved it)
  • Peter Rabbit 2 (wasn’t neccessary, but still enjoyed it)
  • Hitman’s Wife Bodyguard (shouldn’t have happened)
  • The White Tiger (weirdly disturbing)
  • Fatherhood (serious Kevin Hart is weird and sad)
  • Till Death (Megan Fox tried her best with what she was given)
  • Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (had some plot holes)
  • Candyman (it became more political than horror)
  • Kate (predictable plot but enjoyable fight scenes)
  • Dune (ended when it was just getting interesting)
  • Army of Thieves (its only saving grace was the non-tragic ending, and I love heist movies)

Worst movies

Usually, I blackout horrible movies from my mind, but this sole entry in this category was a special case.

It was so bad that I immediately deleted it after watching it. And to think it had potential.

  • Black Friday

Best TV Shows

I’m a big fan of TV Shows. And this year had some pretty great ones too.

  • Arcane (totally worth the hype)
  • Squid Game (worth the hype)
  • The Sex Lives of College Girls (watched it twice)
  • Shadow and Bone (pretty decent book adaptation)
  • You S3
  • The Witcher S2
  • Loki (made me like the character)
  • Wanda Vision (interesting execution)
  • Hawkeye (I’d give anything for a Kate Bishop and Yelena spinoff show)
  • Falcon and The Winter Soldier
  • Never Have I Ever S2 (it did much better than S1)
  • Lucifer S6 (one of the best finales I’ve seen in a while after Wynona Earp)
